Sustainability at
Network Plus

Making a difference: protecting the future whilst maintaining today.

We want to leave a positive, sustainable legacy wherever we work. As such, our work around sustainability weaves many existing Network Plus initiatives together.

Our sustainability framework is built upon 4 key pillars, bringing many of our initiatives together:

  • Taking care of the environment
  • Helping communities thrive
  • Being a great place to work
  • Being a responsible business.

Taking care of the environment

We take our role in environmental sustainability seriously and play our part in helping tackle climate change, using technology and innovation to minimise our impact and working with our clients to facilitate the UK’s 2050 Net Zero carbon emissions target.

Current initiatives include:

Low emissions fleet

Having identified fleet as the biggest contributor to our carbon footprint, we have implemented a range of actions to reduce emissions, including:

  • Policy to have an average fleet age of less than 2 years
  • Installation of 25 EV charge points across offices/depots
  • Sourced over 150 EV & Hybrid vehicles
  • Strategic partnership with Bridge Group for EV charge point provision
  • Implemented driver behaviour training, helping increase fuel economy.

Recycling Aggregates

We are proactively working to minimise waste and maximise use of recycled materials.

  • Creation of Network Recycling Solutions (NRS) as an in-house recycling facility
  • Using internal and eternal facilities, we work to divert waste from landfill and maximise carbon savings.
  • We have procured over 92.5% recycled aggregates across the Network Plus Group.

Recycling Plastics

We are working with local supplier Melba Swintext to procure responsibly sourced barriers for our operations across the UK. A significant percentage of our Traffic Management Barriers are manufactured using 100% recycled plastics.

We have also partnered with MacRebur to trial the use of an innovative plastic tarmac solution in the North West. The product processes waste plastics and adds them to asphalt for road surfacing. Every tonne of MacRebur mix contains the equivalent of 80,000 plastic bottles. Tests have shown this product to be significantly stronger than the current British Standards for asphalt.

Helping communities thrive

We place customer and stakeholder satisfaction at the heart of our business, and consider how we can leave a positive, sustainable impact wherever possible.

Current initiatives include:

Volunteering & Community Projects

In 2021 our teams completed 250 volunteer days across 8 community projects.

For example, in Fazakerley, we raised £24,000 of funding to support the local foodbank in hiring a new community advisor. The advisor is providing free support and advice to local residents for a range of topics from energy efficiency to debt management.

We have also worked with our client to provide carbon monoxide awareness training at the local Centre for Warmth, supporting community champions to cascade safety guidance and advice in the area.

School Engagement & Women in Industry

Throughout 2021, we have supported Women in Industry and School Engagement days with local schools and colleges in the North West.

We are also working with partners as part of the “In My Footsteps” campaign – with members of Network Plus team from all levels have participated in short video interviews to showcase the array of interesting roles available in our sector.

Social Value Funding & Match Funding

Working with one of our clients, we have established a “Use it or Lose it” Trust, which has funded 4 community schemes, donating £83,000 to date. One of these schemes funded a new Arts and Wellbeing centre and IT upgrades.

Network Plus supports 2 charities: Macmillan Cancer Support and the Children’s Adventure Farm Trust (CAFT) with funding and project support. Our depots and contracts are invited to also support local charities and initiatives as opportunities present themselves.

Being a great place to work

We believe our people are the key to our success. We are committed to providing the best possible working environment, helping attract, develop and retain key talent across operational and support roles.

Current initiatives include:

Prioritising Mental Health & Wellbeing

Our dedicated Occupational Health Expert manages our strategy and programme of employee wellbeing activities which include:

  • Annual wellbeing calendar
  • 73 Mental Health First aiders
  • Signposting to support available.

Talent Management & Succession Plans

In 2021, we appointed a new Head of Learning and Development for the Group. We have also refreshed our Talent Management and Succession Planning processes to ensure they reflect industry best practice.

Having recently completed a talent review, succession plans have been developed across both operations and support functions to ensure a sustainable workforce.

Employee Benefits and Support

We operate an employee benefits programme through Perkbox, focusing on financial, emotional and physical wellbeing. In addition to a range of discounts, Perkbox provides an independent employee assistance programme, offering 24/7 helpline and advice service.

Being a responsible business

We are committed to upholding the highest standards of corporate governance, embedding robust processes, controls and procedures to manage and mitigate risks, make sustainable investment decisions and ensure compliance with legislation.

Current initiatives include:

Project Angel – Supplier Development

In 2021, we established a supply chain development programme, Project Angel, trialling the concept on our gas operations. The programme sees Network Plus provide suppliers with a range of support to help develop and grow their businesses, including:

  • Strategic Advice and Development Planning
  • Facilitation, Mentoring and Training
  • Access to Business Tools (e.g. Benchmarking)
  • Regional business links (clients and suppliers)
  • Seed Funding, Grants and Innovation Funding

Employment and Remuneration

We are committed to providing fair pay and remuneration across all roles, in line with the Living Wage and all legislative requirements. This includes protection of human rights and ensuring ethical standards are upheld at all times.

Our gender pay-gap report is completed annually and the results are communicated transparently for external review. The results of this analysis are used to identify clear improvement action plans to ensure parity across the Group.

We are also committed to fair and prompt payment across our supply chain, to promote and ensure the sustainability of their businesses.

Digital Cyber Security Training

Our comprehensive suite of IT and Data Security Policies and associated safeguards form a strong line of defence against cyber threats. We have external accreditations such as Cyber Essentials Plus certification, and we are working towards others.
