Network Plus supports United Utilities to renew 24km of water pipes in West Cumbria

Collaborative work with United Utilities

We’re working collaboratively with our client United Utilities, to renew 24km of water pipelines in West Cumbria. This major resilience project is to ensure continuous supplies of water for future generations.  We’ve deployed a variety of techniques to renew the pipes, including sliplining and innovative use of ‘ice pigging’. John Hilton, Project Director at United Utilities gave us some great feedback recently:

“It is only due to the hard work by Chris and the team and the work they have done with our UU Ops and capital project team that we are looking good. The innovation to overcome the construction challenges is fantastic and the recent productivity is amazing, even during the recent spate of bad weather”.

Renewal Work

The project is due for completion in Spring 2020. We have worked closely with our partner Amey who have provided design expertise.  The project has been split into strategic sections of 2km each in order to ensure continuous supply of water and minimise any risks to customers in the area. The majority of renewal work has been carried out via sliplining method, with 4km ice pigging to clean some of the more difficult to access lengths of existing mains.
